The Players to Watch at the Super Bowl
Are the Pass Catchers
If you follow our baseball work, you know that one of the strengths of what Sports Info Solutions does with data is that we’re able to separate out different aspects of a player’s skill.
We can do this in football too, and this week in our Stat of the Week we noted that the Patriots and Seahawks rank second and third, respectively, in overall Receiving Total Points.
Team | Receiving Total Points |
1. Lions | 120 |
2. Patriots | 118 |
3. Seahawks | 102 |
4. Rams | 101 |
5. 49ers | 97 |
What is Receiving Total Points? It’s a component of our all-encompassing player value stat, Total Points (learn more about that stat here).
Completing a pass is a task requiring the work of many. The passer, blockers, and pass catchers all have certain things they can do to make a play successful.

For pass catchers, we separate the skills involved in making a reception from everything else that happens. A pass catcher gets credits and debits based on how they perform compared to an expectation.
They get evaluated on how well they earn targets and how well they catch the ball and gain yards after the catch based on the route, coverage, throw accuracy, and how much space they had at the catch point.
There are also adjustments based on the quality of the blocking, as blown blocks will prevent an offense from operating at full capacity.
The Seahawks and Patriots pass catchers have provided as much value as any team in the NFL. They’ve done their part to make Sam Darnold and Drake Maye look good.
Three players from those rosters rank in the top 10 among individuals (Jaxon Smith-Njigba 3rd, Stefon Diggs 6th, Hunter Henry 10th).
Player | Team | Receiving Total Points |
1. Puka Nacua | Rams | 63 |
2. Trey McBride | Cardinals | 52 |
3. Jaxon Smith-Njigba | Seahawks | 43 |
4. Bijan Robinson | Falcons | 39 |
5. Ja’Marr Chase | Bengals | 38 |
6. Stefon Diggs | Patriots | 36 |
7. Amon-Ra St. Brown | Lions | 36 |
8. George Pickens | Cowboys | 35 |
9. Justin Jefferson | Vikings | 32 |
10. Hunter Henry | Patriots | 31 |
