An Old-Fashioned Stat-Off

On this week's edition of The Off The Charts Football podcast, the crew of Matt Manocherian, Alex Vigderman, James Weaver, and Bryce Rossler decided to have a stat-off. Each person shared a stat that they found significant and fascinating from the season so far.

Between them, they generated more than a dozen. Some of the highlights included:

* Jared Verse and Byron Young of the Rams have combined for 13 sacks, 67 pressures, 22 knockdowns, four forced fumbles, and three holding penalties. They have combined for more sacks and more pressures than the Bears and Panthers have as teams.

* Jaxon Smith-Njigba has garnered 38% of the Seahawks' pass targets so far this year. That rate would be 3 percentage points more than any receiver has done over a full season in at least the last decade.

* Speaking of sacks and speaking of paces, the Broncos, who are averaging 4.9 sacks per game, are on pace to break the NFL's single-season team sack record. The 1984 Bears had 72 sacks.

* Sam Darnold leads the NFL in ADoT with his average throw going 9.7 yards downfield. Dillon Gabriel has the shortest at 6.0 yards. Darnold has completed 68.2% of his passes. Gabriel has completed 59.8%. Go figure.

* And speaking of quarterbacks, 40-year-old Joe Flacco had the second-best game by a quarterback this season in terms of Passing Total Points, a performance that ranked in the top 40 of the SIS era (since 2016).

For the full list of stats, check out this week’s episode.

Also stat-related, give a read to Anthony Haage's article on which teams have had the most fourth-down success since the start of last season. He had lots to say about Dan Campbell, who's certainly not shy about going for it, but also the Washington Commanders, whose performance has been impressive since Jayden Daniels took over as quarterback.
