Parity, Game Quality, The Trade Deadline,
And A Week 9 Preview
Our podcast crew crammed a lot of topics into their 40-minute show this week.
They touched on how the NFL has become a league of haves and have-nots.
“A lot of the good offenses are the good defenses, and a lot of the bad defenses are the bad offenses. Just take a look at our bottom five teams overall in Total Points. We've got the Saints, Titans, Bengals, Jets, and Raiders. All of those teams are 21st or worst at offense, and 21st or worse at defense … But if you look at the top side of the total points, rankings, a similar pattern emerges … The Chiefs are 3rd on offense, 3rd on defense, Broncos are 6th on offense, 4th on defense, the Bills are 2nd on offense, 8th on defense, the Lions are 9th on offense, 5th on defense.”
-Matt Manocherian
They considered some trade deadline targets
“I think the Bengals should trade Trey Hendrickson. Turn him into draft capital. Get an offensive lineman.”
-Bryce Rossler
They looked in-depth at Chiefs vs Bills.
“I think the Bills probably will play more two-high than they usually do. I think that will open them up in the run game. And I think that there are definite chances to run on them because I think they probably have the worst safety duo in the league … So I do think the Chiefs run the ball pretty well on them, especially because the Chiefs are 3rd in EPA per attempt in running the ball, which I don’t think people would have expected coming into the year.”
-Bryce Rossler
And they went beyond that game too …
Our crew didn't just talk Chiefs-Bills on The Off The Charts podcast this week. They also got into it on what the Texans need to do to beat the Broncos. @mattmano.bsky.social Listen: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w...

And also check out Ryan Rubenstein’s midseason look at the Micah Parsons trade. Not surprisingly, the deal has been a game-changer for the Packers and the Cowboys defense has suffered. In tangible terms, Parsons is more than doubling Kenny Clark’s pressure percentage as a pass rusher with a 23% pressure rate compared to Clark’s 9%. We break down the details further using Expected Points Added as our guide.

It seems unfair to us that The Fielding Bible Award winners get all the attention. So this week, we shined a light on the runners-up in the voting.

What We’re Reading/Watching
“With Warren on the field, the Colts' offense is averaging 0.26 EPA per play and a startling 57% positive play rate, per Sports Info Solutions. He can line up in the backfield, he'll line up spread away from the formation and when the Colts get him the ball, good things happen. Easy pick for Offensive Rookie of the Year.”
-JP Acosta, CBS Sports
“RPOs account for 19% of Penn State's offense, but the Nittany Lions are averaging just 4.2 yards per play off RPOs, ranked 128th”
“Tennessee's Joey Aguilar leads the SEC in downfield completion rate. Oklahoma's John Mateer ranks 15th.”
“Virginia Tech has allowed a pressure rate 37% higher than its opponents have generated against everyone else.”
