On this week’s Off The Charts Football Podcast, Matt Manocherian, James Weaver, Alex Vigderman, and Bryce Rossler did a comprehensive evaluation of the NFC West teams.
One thing we try to do in our content, whether it be podcast, articles, or social media, is to use the data we have and the stats we calculate to evaluate players beyond the basic information you’ll get from mainstream media.
That came up both in the short video above and in this one, in which Matt explains why Sam Darnold is not necessarily the player most responsible for his own success.
Other topics covered this week on Off The Charts included Mac Jones vs Brock Purdy, concerns over Christian McCaffrey, the Cardinals changes in strategy with Jacoby Brissett at QB, and the Seahawks offensive line improvements. Hope you’ll give us a listen!

Find Us A Good Stat On J.J. McCarthy … Please
“Among 37 quarterbacks with 100+ attempts, McCarthy currently ranks 33rd in passing Total Points per play with a number that rounds to 0 from the nearest hundredth. What this means, effectively, is that he has been a replacement-level passer through the first four games of his career (minimum 20 snaps each game).”
This week’s article from Bryce Rossler doesn’t hold back in its evaluation of McCarthy. And yes, the Vikings are 2-2 in his first four games, but it hasn’t looked good.
“If you do enough filtering, you can usually find a split that reflects well on a player. That’s been really difficult to do with McCarthy. For example: on un-pressured throws between 10-19 yards – something a quarterback should look really good at under Kevin O’Connell – he’s 38th in Total Points/pass among 39 quarterbacks with 10 or more attempts.”
Perhaps things will change in time as McCarthy and the coaching staff make adjustments. And if it does, we’ll owe McCarthy another article.
In the meantime, check this one out.
