Patrick Mahomes Is Still The King Of Clutch

This week, our Alex Vigderman operationalized clutch.

What we mean when we say that is that he combined our all-encompassing player value stat, Total Points, with a leverage index of his creation which allowed us to assess which quarterbacks fare best and raise their game in high-leverage situations.

Here are three 1st-and-10 situations around midfield that have different leverage indices by our calculations.

Average leverage: 1st quarter, 4 minutes left, 7 point lead

High leverage (1.5x average): 4th quarter, 4 minutes left, tie game

Low leverage (0.5x average): 2nd quarter, 4 minutes left, 13 point lead

Alex took each quarterback’s relative success in fourth quarters and high-leverage situation (compared to the rest of their plays) and averaged them to create a “clutch composite.”

You’re probably not surprised to learn that Patrick Mahomes ranked No. 1 among current quarterbacks with at least 1,500 dropbacks and carries. But were you expecting Kyler Murray to be high on that leaderboard? How about Carson Wentz? They’re on it.
