And Micah Parsons Return

Rather than just talk about the injuries to Micah Parsons and Davante Adams in general terms, Alex Vigderman looked at recent data for the types of injuries suffered by players who play the same position as those two.
On Parsons
“In looking at a recent sample of 11 edge rushers who tore their ACLs and played at least 9 games after the injury, we can expect a pretty meaningful productivity drop-off in the year following Parsons’ return.”
Edge rusher productivity changes following an ACL tear
Difference | Difference (as %) | |
Snaps per G | -5 | -12% |
Total Points per play | -0.01 | -25% |
Snap-to-Pressure time | +0.23 s | -20%* |
* If we assume a floor of 1.5 seconds on this metric
On Adams
“I looked at about 30 wide receiver hamstring injuries over the last several seasons and how much/well they played upon their return, compared to their previous year’s average.
The results suggest that we should expect Adams to see a slight drop-off in playing time in his first several games, and his per-play output will take a couple games to return to normal.”

What Do We See When We Scrutinize
NBA Defenses More Closely?

One of the things that we do that makes us distinct in how we cover basketball is how we chart positive and negative defensive plays. These may be things that don’t show up in the box score, such as disrupting a shot or deterring a player from attacking the rim or making a bad gamble on defense that leads to an open shot for an opponent.
We refer to these as positive and negative DPLAYs.
Unsurprisingly, the NBA-torching Oklahoma City Thunder lead the league in positive defensive playmaking, averaging 15.2 positive DPLAYs per 100 possessions. The Toronto Raptors, Pistons, Cavaliers, and Suns round out the top five, all at around 14 per game.
Here are the player leaders on a per-play basis.
Player | Positive DPLAYs per 100 possessions |
Cason Wallace (OKC) | 5.5 |
Dru Smith (MIA) | 5.1 |
Dyson Daniels (ATL) | 5.1 |
Jalen Suggs (ORL) | 4.8 |
Herbert Jones (NOP) | 4.6 |
While there are plenty of negative DPLAYs that can add up, one of the most costly is a breakdown.
*Breakdown = Player makes a defensive miscue through poor communication, understanding of scheme, or decision-making leading to a significant offensive advantage.
Here are the player leaders on a per-play basis.
Player | Breakdowns per 100 possessions |
James Harden (LAC) | 2.1 |
Michael Porter Jr. (BKN) | 1.8 |
Russell Westbrook (SAC) | 1.8 |
Alex Sarr (WAS) | 1.7 |
Derik Queen (NOP) | 1.6 |
