Inside The Draft Website: Scouting Reports (Part 1)

One of the biggest projects at our company is The SIS NFL Draft Website. This is a combined effort from our Operations team and our R&D team. In total, we’ll publish more than 300 scouting reports, about half of which are on the site right now. They’re the result of hours of work and research to make sure that every detail is well-covered.

We’ll take a quick look at our scouting reports today (we’ll focus on words this week, stats and ratings next week).

The reports are written as if the writer is a member of an NFL team’s scouting department and the reader is a general manager or draft decision maker. A report is based on what role the player will have at the start of his second NFL season.

You can find the player you’re looking for on our Big Board or can do a search if you don’t see his name come up. After you do, you’ll be taken to his overview page. This is the overview for David Bailey, our No. 2-ranked player and No. 1-ranked edge rusher.

The overview page includes Bailey’s measurements, as well as an injury grade. We have an injuries group within our operations department that tracks and evaluates players both in college and the NFL. Bailey received a Low Risk injury grade, meaning there is a low chance of any long-term injury risk at this time.

Below his measurements are his overall rank, his position rank, and his Draft Grade, which is done on a 5.4 to 7.5 scale. Bailey scored almost as high as a player can score. He’s a 6.9 (per our glossary, he’s a “strong starter” by the start of his second NFL season).

Below that is what is intended to be a quick summary of what Bailey offers. “Bailey has an explosive first step,” it reads, “a polished pass rush repertoire, and a habit of making big plays that will make him an immediate three-down starter with few limitations early on and All-Pro potential in his future.” With that are three bullet points summarizing both his strengths and weaknesses.

If you’re looking for something more detailed than this, you can either go to the “Scouting Report” tab or click on “View Full Scouting Report.” Either will take you to the page below.

There’s a lot of information here but all of our scouting reports have the same premise: educate you on a player such that you’ll know everything you need to know about whether he can succeed in the NFL.

Our scouts do an overall analysis, breakdowns of how he looks in the pass game and run game, and then a “last word” which serves as the most important points of emphasis. Our Glossary is readily available to help with terminology you might not know or understand.

As our scout, Kyle Shatto, notes on Bailey “There is an obvious confidence and swagger to his game which jumps off the screen in virtually every game of his season at Texas Tech.” Other key points include that he is “extremely productive” on 3rd and 4th downs, a “good tackler,” and has “an elite first step.”

Within the next few weeks, we’ll have more than 300 of these reports on our site.

“The amount of work that goes into this is astronomical,” said our associate director of football operations, Nathan Cooper. “Nearly 70 scouts, a mix of full-time members of the company and seasonal data scouts, watch, grade, and write up over 700 players between September and April. Our six-man scouting team then watches, confirms, and edits every player and report before it and the player are deemed worthy of a high enough grade to make it onto the NFL Draft Website or not. Not to mention, there is an additional layer of editing from the R&D department, and injury histories and checks from our operations and injury departments.”

And there’s a lot more on these scouting report pages that we didn’t even get to: Player Ratings and Stats in abundance! We’ll take a look at those things next week.

Our post-Super Bowl edition includes an assessment of what the Patriots and Seahawks offseasons could look like.

A sequel to our list of the Top 10 defensive players. On this one we’re focusing on players age 25-and-under (like Victor Scott, Javier Sanoja, and of course, Pete Crow-Armstrong).

What We’re Reading/Watching

Clark Dalton at Yardbarker cites our scouting reports on Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.

“The Bears led the NFL in games lost to injuries, according to Sports Info Solutions (full details) and most of it was on defense, but somehow defensive coordinator Dennis Allen coped.”

Our statistical information package includes Total Points, our proprietary metric that values everything that happens on the field, as well as position-specific performance data in the form of raw totals, averages, and percentile rankings. And we explain our stats in our glossary.
