We know it’s Super Bowl week, but check out our newly updated NFL Draft website. Much more on this in the coming weeks, but we’ve got scouting reports on all the top players (more than 300 by the time we’re done), as well as ratings, rankings, plenty of statistical analysis, and injury information.
Enjoy the game!
The Seahawks Are Good Even When Sam Darnold Isn’t
Bryce Rossler led our Super Bowl LX coverage by asking this question, “What if we are underrating the ability of Seattle to withstand Sam Darnold laying an egg?”
Bryce was speaking to those who have seen Darnold struggle, whether with the Jets, Panthers, Vikings, or this year with the Seahawks. He found that when one quarterback, not the other, has a net negative EPA, “the results are pretty dismal.” Their teams win only 8% of the time.
Yet just this year, the Seahawks have gone 4-2 despite such performances by Darnold in the 2025 season, including wins over the Texans in Week 7 and the Rams in Week 16 in which Darnold registered -14 EPA both times.
There isn’t some magic quality at work here. As Bryce wrote:
“All the discussion about Darnold coming undone in the final hour as a key to a Pats victory has ignored the fact that a defense that ranks 1st in EPA/play allowed against the run and 5th against the pass, has carried them when Darnold does wet the bed. They’ve kept it close, even in the losses, and it’s been harder to break them than it has been to break Darnold.
Perhaps it’s better said that a Patriots win might require a bad showing from Darnold and a lackluster effort from the defense, and that’s much, much more daunting if you’re a New England fan.”
Yes, we gave away the ending and some of the key details, but this is a good piece. Be sure to check it out.

What Happened To The Patriots Aerial Attack?
Ok, so we’re not particularly bullish about the Patriots’ chances this week. Our James Weaver wrote about Drake Maye’s struggles this postseason and the numbers aren’t great even if you take the bad weather in Denver out of the equation.
“Drake Maye and the Patriots passing attack have posted the lowest Passing Total Points per Play (-0.28) and the 4th-lowest Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt (4.6 ANY/A) of all playoff teams,” he wrote. “That’s a stark difference when they were humming with the 11th-highest Passing Total Points per Play (0.16) and 2nd-highest ANY/A (8.2) in the regular season … Even if we take the Broncos game out, Maye was still the lowest in Passing Total Points Per Play.”
As is noted in this article, Maye’s expected accuracy has dropped by 11.5 percentage points and his turnover-worthy throws have increased by 2.4 percentage points in the playoffs. This is what happens when you repeatedly face very good defenses.
James made the case that the Patriots need the MVP candidate version of Maye in this game because the Seahawks defense is so good (echoing the point in the other article). As he said, “Easier said than done!”
Also From SIS
Our Super Bowl preview edition. The crew spends 30 minutes on pressing questions related to the game, like ‘Can the Patriots do anything to stop Jaxon Smith-Njigba?’
Among those who made Mark Simon’s list: Blue Jays utility man Ernie Clement, Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan, and Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela. But none of them were No. 1.
What We’re Reading/Watching
Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston looks at Maye from a slightly different perspective than we did, focusing on how the Seahawks match up against mobile QBs.
Among the picks from the 24-7 crew, this from Josh Taylor on how Hunter Henry may have a big day: “Per Sports Info Solutions, the Seahawks defense gave up a total of 1,044 yards in coverage to tight ends during the regular season (61.4 yards per game), which was seventh-most.”
