NFL Draft: The QBs Beyond Mendoza

This is a weak draft for quarterbacks. You know it. We know it. Once you get past Fernando Mendoza, there isn’t anyone worthy of being a first-round pick by our measures.

But is there maybe a gem lurking somewhere within? We went through our scouting reports looking for the most positive assessment on the different quarterbacks who will be available. We wanted to give you something to buy into and something to believe in if your team ends up with one of these players. Maybe they can harness the talent into something good.

Here are the next five quarterbacks on our Draft board, each of whom project as a “limited starter.”

QB2 Ty Simpson (Overall Rank: #68)
“Simpson shows tremendous football IQ and quick decision making to get the ball out of his hands … One of his best traits is his ability to synchronize his eyes and feet as he progresses through his reads, allowing him to optimize and limit any wasted motion in his release.”

QB3 Garrett Nussmeier (Overall Rank: #101)

“He has the ability to command the huddle, showing leadership qualities to help rally his team up behind him. He does a good job with pre-snap communication, getting players where they need to go or changing plays if needed … He does a good job driving the football, showing good arm strength, with the ability to layer it over second-level defenders into the intermediate level of the field. He can drive the ball down the field on deep throws, giving his receivers a chance to make a play.”

QB4 Cade Klubnik (Overall Rank #102)

“Klubnik has the arm talent, athleticism, and composure in the pocket to be an eventual starter at the next level … Klubnik excels in the pocket with his composure and ability to throttle his throw speed to layer throws across the field. He shows sound footwork in his dropbacks and active footwork in the pocket as he begins to go through his progressions … Klubnik is a natural runner and has proven himself as a threat on designed runs. He has good acceleration and speed, and still has the body control to force missed tackles.”

QB5 Carson Beck (Overall Rank #113)

Beck can be an efficient distributor of an offense with reliable short accuracy and the ability to work through his progressions. He can throw a catchable ball with touch when he is comfortable and has time in the pocket. His touch can also extend to the intermediate area of the field where he has shown he can layer the ball over the second level of the defense either down the seams or to hit a hole shot on the edges of the field.”

QB6 Drew Allar (Overall Rank #116)

Allar possesses a plethora of tools that are desired for the position. He displays very good arm strength that allows him to make every throw on the field. The ball comes out of his hand with good velocity even when he can't get his feet underneath him … He is an accurate passer on short and intermediate throws, especially when coming off play action and can throw to his first or second read in rhythm.”
