Analyzing Pass Rusher Archetypes and Tendencies
Give our folks a new data set to examine and they’re going to pick it apart in every way possible.
On this week’s edition of the Off The Charts Football Podcast, our crew of James Weaver, Matt Manocherian, Alex Vigderman, and Bryce Rossler dug into our new pass rush data.
SIS charts up to three pass rush moves per player per play, tagged sequentially, and about a dozen distinct pass rush moves. We also chart things like stunts, who the crasher is (first man in the stunt), who the looper is (the second player in the stunt).
Among the things discussed in the podcast was the two clusters of pass rushers: The first cluster is technicians. The second is power, essentially answering the question of whether a rusher has multiple means of attack or is “a one-trick pony.”
The crew also got into frequency of moves, sequencing, entropy ( how much your distribution of pass rush moves is flat or is centered on one or two moves), and much more. Coming soon is an article on findings within the data, as well as an episode discussing this subject from an offense’s perspective.
Also, a heads-up: The next episode of Off The Charts will feature our college football crew, as we’ll be working them into the mix much more this year.

The NFL Draft Website has scouting reports for more than 400 of the top players. With that, we’ve got ratings and rankings. It’s basically everything a GM would want to know about the NFL’s top rookies heading into the 2026 season.
Our statistical information package includes Total Points, our proprietary metric that values everything that happens on the field, as well as position-specific performance data in the form of raw totals, averages, and percentile rankings. And we explain our stats in our glossary.
